Understanding my cultural identity

The definition of Mega Skill 1

Understanding my cultural identity is the understanding of how we think about ourselves as well as the people and ways of life with which we identify.

A known Jamaican motto states, “out of many, we are one.”  The meaning behind that saying is Jamaicans are made up of many different backgrounds and cultures.  We come together and are known as one kind, Jamaican.

As a born and raised Jamaican, my culture believes in the natural way of life.  What ever grows from the earth may be used for natural healing. Smoking marijuana is not only considered as a healthy healing remedy, it is also a part of the Rastafarian religion and viewed as an aphrodisiac as well.

Among the Rasta’s marijuana is called many names, such "the herb," "the grass," "the weed," and so on. Marijuana is sometimes called "the wisdom weed," it is said that the weed was first grown on the grave of King Solomon (Solomon was the son of King David for those religions folks), at the time to believed to have been the wisest man on the earth. When used in ritual contexts, the name became known as the "holy herb" as various scriptures are given as proof of its sanctity.

Some background information about the Rastafarian religion is (Rasta, or the Rastafarian movement, is a new religious movement that accepts Haile Selassie I, the former emperor of Ethiopia, as Jah (the Rastafarian name for God incarnate, from a shortened form of Jehovah found in Psalms 68:4 in the King James Version of the Bible), and part of the Holy Trinity as the messiah promised to return in the Bible. The name Rastafari comes from Ras (Duke) Tafari Makonnen, the pre-coronation name of Haile Selassie I. The movement emerged in Jamaica among working-class and peasant black people in the early 1930s, arising from an interpretation of Biblical prophecy partly based on Selassie's status as the only African monarch with a fully independent kingdom, and his titles of King of Kings, Lord of Lords and Conquering Lion of Judah (Rev. 5:5).

Other factors leading to its rise include black social and political aspirations, and the teachings of Jamaican black publicist and organizer such as Marcus Garvey (once got over a million blacks to migrate back to Africa and was ban here in the United States, he was often regarded as a prophet, whose political and cultural vision helped inspire a new world view.

The movement is sometimes called "Rastafarianism", although Rasta’s considers this improper and offensive. The Rastafarian movement has spread throughout much of the world, largely through immigration and interest generated through Nyahbinghi  (Ska) and reggae music most notably, that of Bob Marley, who was baptized Berhane Selassie (Light of the Trinity) in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church before his death.

As discussed before marijuana is actually one of the most powerful and effective aphrodisiacs know to man.
  •  Increase sexual behaviors
  •   Treatment of nausea often associated with cancer chemotherapy treatment
  •   Reduction of pressure in the eyes benefiting individuals with glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in the U.S.  Relief of pain often associated with cancer

However, used in excess it can cause problems such

  •   (THC), which causes the mind-altering effects of marijuana intoxication
  •  Increased chance of heart attack
  • Increased risk of respiratory infection  Increased risk of lung cancer, mouth cancer, and cancer of the respiratory tract

With the medical marijuana drug card circulating there can be a business aspect incorporated within it.  The new trends require new ways of how to market, educate, and improve the marijuana product.  Being in the web designing program I will be able to provide and design a website and build digital applications.  This will assist you in providing information such as the nearest licensed distributor from your iPhone or any other smart phone.

“ As we say don’t drink and drive, Smoke and fly”

Cultural View?

Marijuana is illegal in Jamaica, however it is not frowned upon.  In Jamaica you do not need a special card from your doctor to obtain marijuana.  For example, an eight-year-old child with enough common sense can purchase Marijuana for a parent.  The illegal side of marijuana in Jamaica is that you cannot distribute it in large quantities. All though there is an illegal aspect to marijuana, it does bring a huge amount of revenue to the island that depends solely on tourism.

Pop Culture's View?

In America, marijuana is taboo to the culture. In the United States it is known as party drug as well as the controversial healing aspect of it. I believe the American culture views marijuana as a sign of rebellion against society, and way of showing their freedom.
